Wankdorf: Largest solar powered system in Switzerland - BKW FMB Energy Ltd to become an energy partner for the National Stadium

BKW FMB Energy Ltd is to construct the largest photovoltaic system in Switzerland on the roof of the Wankdorf National Stadium in Berne. This system is to be expanded on a staged basis in line with demand in collaboration with the interested local authorities and electricity companies, first of all with the region of Berne. As an energy partner to Wankdorf Nationalstadion AG, BKW FMB Energy Ltd will also provide the energy management for the entire sports, cultural and business complex.
The Wankdorf National Stadium will the largest multifunctional arena in the country with an integrated comprehensive training and business complex. The spaciously designed superstructure will be created on an area covering more than 50'000 m2 in the Wankdorf district of Berne which has ideal public and private transport links.
The intention is that the building complex of the new Swiss National Stadium, which is being constructed on a historic site, is should provide a model from a range of aspects. For example, Wankdorf Nationalstadion AG and BKW FMB Energy Ltd have agreed a partnership for the purpose of designing every aspect of the energy requirements using state-of-the-art know-how. In addition, within the framework of this energy partnership, the aim will be to install on the roof areas of the stadium and the annex building what will be, when finished, the largest photovoltaic system in Switzerland covering an area of around 5'300 m2 and, under optimum conditions, generating a peak output of 600 Kilowatts. The system will be operated and scientifically analysed in accordance with the know-how of the firm of Mont-Soleil which has been acquired over many years. The plant is to be constructed in stages in order to meet what is hoped to be the rapidly rising demand.
The City and the local authorities as well as the electricity companies in the Berne region will be invited to participate in the marketing of the solar power, the aim of which will be to complete all the planned stages of the development as soon as possible. Work on the construction of the photovoltaic system is to commence from Spring 2005. The total investment required to realise every stage of the construction is forecast to be around 7 million Francs.
