Mühleberg nuclear power plant
Annual maintenance outage begins
Bern (ots)
BKW shut down the Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM) yesterday for scheduled maintenance work and refuelling to take place. The work will take about four weeks.
Extensive internal and external testing of the reactor pressure vessel, preventive electrical and mechanical maintenance as well as the periodic testing of components, fittings and systems are the priorities this year. In addition, 36 of the 240 fuel assemblies will be exchanged and six of the 57 control rod drives will be replaced.
The 345 KKM employees will be assisted by about 700 external specialists from the region, from elsewhere in Switzerland and from abroad. The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) will carry out a number of on-site inspections during this time.
The start of the maintenance outage marks the end of the 41st operating cycle of the KKM, which is notable for high availability and energy production.
