The new Hotel Gates
opened in Berlin

A PC with free high speed Internet access in every hotel room - this sounds like a good idea but to date it had not been realised worldwide. This service is now being offered by the newly opened Hotel Gates in the German capital, Berlin. A particular highlight of the opening phase is individual surfing training - also free.
The traditional style hotel near famous Kurfuerstendamm has been completely renovated and adapted to the requirements of travellers in this information society. In each of the 72 rooms of this elegant building - parts of which are under preservation order - guests will find a modern flat screen PC with a 2.3 Mbit dedicated line on which they can surf round the clock free of charge, find out what's on in Berlin, send E-mail messages or even work "offline" on the popular Office software program. The system interface is set up in six languages, making the service also available in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian.
"Nowadays it is even possible to surf the Internet on a plane", says proprietor Abraham Rosenthal explaining the reasoning behind his idea. "But the hotel sector is still lagging behind in this information society". Rosenthal sees the 3.5 million Euro renovation costs - 250,000 Euros alone were spent on IT equipment - as a good investment. "Berlin can expect rising visitor numbers over the next few years. We feel sure we have the right product for guests of the future"
Of course, not every visitor is an Internet expert - which is why, in addition to free Internet access, the Hotel Gates has one more special service on offer in its introductory phase. The hotel will provide a surfing instructor to give every hotel guest a personal introduction to the Internet, if required. From the first steps into the worldwide web to useful insider tips for computer experts - all questions answered and, of course, free of charge.
With the help of the instructor, guests not only learn about the Internet, but they are taken on a virtual Berlin Tour. Current events, opening times or the locations of good shops - the instructor will help hotel guests make their stay even more exciting.
Traditional, yet modern - the Hotel Gates offers its guests an attractive combination. Despite the most modern computer technology, guests are not surrounded by a cold high-tech environment. The listed façade, the stairwell and breakfast room have all been lavishly restored. The visitor can experience its glamorous past: In the 1950s the hotel, originally the "Hotel Windsor", rolled out the red carpet for international stars such as Marlon Brando and Harry Belafonte.
