Valora achieves further milestone in its "Valora 4 Success" strategy programme - Logistics project on track - New processes and modern technology pave way for greater efficiency and higher quality levels
Logistics project on track
One element of the "Valora 4 Success" strategy programme launched in the autumn of 2008 on which the Group has been working intensively in recent months is enhancing the efficiency of its logistics operations. The drive to optimise Valora´s logistics involves relocating logistics operations from Muttenz to Egerkingen, introducing a new logistics operating system and a number of additional adjustments to press handling procedures. The transformation of Valora´s logistics functions remains on track and will be completed on schedule in late 2009.
New processes and modern technology pave the way for greater efficiency and higher quality levels
Following the smooth introduction of the new logistics system (WAMAS), which was completed for beverage products in early June 2009, optimisation tests for press products logistics have now also been successfully completed. Using new processes and "pick by light" technology, Valora will in future use a decentralised approach for picking, sorting and packing the press products it delivers, rather than the centralised production line used in Muttenz hitherto. "This new approach will cut press product throughput times by half", says Stefan Gächter, head of Valora´s logistics operations, "That means greater flexibility for deliveries and higher quality levels for our customers and publishing partners." The new approach will bring about a fundamental improvement in the way press product picking, sorting and packing is carried out, thus raising both quality and efficiency levels.
The switch to the new methodology will affect 15 full-time jobs, of which five are accounted for through early retirements. "Together with the union Syna we have developed a plan to assist those concerned by these changes", says Thomas Vollmoeller, Valora´s CEO.
