1st Baltic Biotech Forum - Life Science as a key for regional economic development at the Baltic Sea Region

Life science is the key technology of the 21st century, first innovative products and production processes revolutionise medicine, agriculture and releaf the environment. More than 120 representatives from science and industry from all the states of the Baltic sea region meet from 8.-9.Nov 2001 in Teschow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, to the first common forum. "This Baltic Biotech Forum will be more than a first step for collaboration of the states at the Baltic sea", so Andrius Kubilius, former prime minister of Lithuania. "As one of the coming new memberstates of the EU we see this forum as an important step to enhance collaboration and the chance for a sustainable economic development in our country."
The organisers, BioTechnikum Greifswald and Medicon Valley Academy, Kopenhagen/Lund, initiated the forum to discuss "How to do science and business on an international scale ". "Our goal is to identify and bring together applied science and industry to develop the Baltic as a international competitive bioregion" says Wolfgang Blank, CEO of BioTechnikum Greifswald and initiator of BioCon Valley in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, one of the 17 German Bioregions.
"The Baltic has the power to be a leading life science cluster. More than 500 companies are working in this branch in the Oeresundregion, with more than 32.000 employees. The successful crossboarderline network we started in 1997 with the Medicon Valley Academy in Sweden and Denmark is the essential tool for this success " Bent Christensen, CEO of Medicon Valley Academy.
Baltic Biotech Forum is partly EU financed. The conference "1st Baltic Biotech Forum" is scheduled for 08. - 09. November 2001 in Teschow, northern Germany.
