6-month report
07.09.2010
The Jungfrau Railway Group can look back on an excellent first half of 2010. It achieved a profit of CHF 9 million in the first six months of the year, equalling the record result of 2008. The Jungfrau Railway Group has increased its half-year profit by 9.5% compared to last year.
At CHF 67.3 million, operating revenue is CHF 1.9 million above that of the previous year. This very pleasing result is based on a successful winter-sport business and a marked increase in the group-travel business. Our intensive increase in marketing activities in Asia succeeded in having a countering effect on last year´s financial and economic crisis. Today, the Jungfrau Railway Group can state that the situation in most of our company´s markets has returned to normal.
Around 20,000 visitors cancelled their trip to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe because of the eruption of the Ejafjallajökull volcano. Despite this occurrence, 265,100 people visited the Jungfraujoch in the first half of the year, only around 3,700 fewer than in 2009. Our second strongest business segment, the winter-sport business, also fulfilled our expectations. The somewhat sluggish start to the season at the end of 2009 was followed by a very busy winter-sport period from January to April, during which the Jungfrau Railway Group achieved an income of CHF 0.9 million above that of the previous year. This increase is due not least of all to the new six-seater Eigernordwand chairlift that was opened in December 2009.
Prospects for the second half-year During the high-season months of July and August 2010, the frequencies for "Arrivals Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe" increased by 7% compared to last year. A major part of this increase is as a result of the "return" of Asian travel groups.
