In addition to the Christmas market, the world's largest free-standing Advent calendar (875 square metres) is providing festive cheer in Leipzig. Since 1 December, one of the three-dimensional windows, which measure 2 x 3 metres, have been opening every day at 5.00 p.m. From 4.30 p.m., a cultural programme full of surprises awaits spectators.
Set up for the first time in 1997 by the Leipzig Tourist Service e.V. (LTS), the calendar remains the largest of its kind in the world and has entered the Guinness Book of Records. Though LTS is already receiving corresponding enquiries, it will be absolutely impossible for other cities to produce a duplicate, since the calendar has been registered at the German Patent Office.
As in previous years, the event has developed into a 'calendar contest' over the past few days. Other cities are also competing to own the largest Advent calendar.
However, these Advent calendars are like 'home calendars' and are not free-standing or transportable. Innovators have turned the windows of their town hall or other buildings into Advent calendars in original ways.
In the Guinness Book of Records, there are three sections for Advent calendars: 1.) the smallest Advent calendar (arsEdition Publishing House); 2.) the largest home calendar (in Gengenbach); 3.) the largest free-standing Advent calendar (in Leipzig). Therefore, a 'calendar contest' is not necessary, as the categories in the Guinness Book of Records are different. Let's look forward to a contemplative Advent.
