Orange configures mobile phones automatically via SMS - Data services on your mobile phone
Lausanne (ots)
Up until now, only Orange customers who bought a pre-configured mobile phone could send multimedia messages (MMS) or access WAP services immediately after purchase. Anyone who opted for a mobile phone which was not set up for data services had to configure it him or herself. It's true that it's easy to configure a mobile phone using the configuration help on the Orange website www.orange.ch or by visiting one of the 36 Orange Centers throughout Switzerland, but now it's even more convenient and easy with the free, automatic configuration that Orange delivers with a short text message (SMS).
Today, Orange customers who buy a new mobile phone or a new SIM card automatically benefit from the new configuration service via SMS. Within at the latest 24 hours after inserting the new SIM card into the mobile phone or turning the new mobile phone on, you can request an SMS with the settings for data services (MMS and WAP) from Orange. The settings received with the configuration SMS from Orange can be saved on your mobile phone at the simple touch of a button. Customers can send and receive MMS and surf on the mobile Internet (WAP) straight away.
During the initial phase, customers who have an up-to-date and popular mobile phone from SonyEricsson or Nokia can benefit from this service. The compatibility of the configuration service via SMS with other devices will continually be upgraded, until all devices can be set up easily, quickly and conveniently to use data services by configuration SMS.
Customers will first receive an SMS inviting them to obtain the settings for WAP and MMS data services. If this invitation is answered with an "OK" by SMS, the configuration SMS will follow. The mobile phone will immediately ask whether the settings received should be saved, and this should be confirmed by pressing simply one single button.
The configuration SMS will only be sent once to each customer. Customers who do not reply to the invitation to receive the free configuration SMS or who do not save the settings transmitted by SMS are given the opportunity to request the settings again later via the Internet on www.orange.ch or by calling Orange Customer Care free of charge (0800'700'700).
Daniel Stumpe, Product Manager for Mobile Internet at Orange, gives this explanation of why this new service is being introduced: "Together with pre-configured mobile phones, automatic configuration by Orange means of SMS is the most customer-friendly way of setting up mobile phones to use data services. Unlike configuring them via the Internet or by visiting an Orange Center, this spares our clients any further bother".
