Over the 2012 period, airberlin has reduced its capacity in a targeted manner by eliminating unprofitable routes and has optimized flight frequencies by 7.4 percent in yearly comparison. In this manner, the capacity utilization rate increased, since airberlin transported 2012 a total of 33,346,495 guests, i.e. only 5.5 percent less than in the previous year (2011: 35,300,209 guests). In December 2012, airberlin increased its capacity utilization rate by 3.1 percentage points over the previous year. Germany's second-largest airline company reduced its capacity in December by 12.1 percent, to 2,375,083 seats, in yearly comparison.
