Atmel Announces That Sirenza Microdevices Surpasses 100 Million Shipped Units of High-Performance RF Products Manufactured in Atmel's SiGe Technology
Heilbronn, Germany and Broomfield, Colorado (ots/PRNewswire)
Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions and Sirenza Microdevices, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMDI) announced today that Sirenza has shipped more than 100 million silicon germanium (SiGe) high-performance RF integrated circuit (IC) products utilizing Atmel's industry-leading, low cost SiGe semiconductor technology.
Atmel's SiGe HBT process has been manufactured in Heilbronn, Germany since 1998. The cost efficiency and high-speed performance of this technology makes it ideal for applications in the area of telecommunications and high-speed data transfer, e.g., for front-end design (DECT, CDMA, Bluetooth(R) etc.), 5.8-GHz WLAN, upcoming power amplifier designs with new requirements (WCDMA, 802.11, Bluetooth range extension, etc.), optical networking according to OC192 and higher, and almost any type of wireless and RF components.
Sirenza launched the SGA amplifier IC series in 2000 and was among the first to market with SiGe products for RF wireless and wireline products. Sirenza features other leading SiGe RF products, including modulators, demodulators and mixers. Total unit shipment volume passed the 100 million mark in the third quarter of 2005.
"Surpassing 100 million units is a significant milestone which demonstrates Sirenza's volume manufacturing capabilities as well as the acceptance of SiGe, as the industry standard for wireless amplification," stated Kin Tan, Sirenza's vice president, manufacturing and operations. "The popularity of these products illustrates the RF performance, reliability and price benefits of SiGe."
"We are proud that Sirenza has chosen Atmel's SiGe technology to manufacture competitive high-end RF products. Atmel's SiGe technology has been very successful for Atmel's own IC products as well as for external foundry customers," said Henrik Gutsch, Atmel's Foundry Marketing Manager. "And our new SiGe process generation with a transit frequency of more than 80 GHz allows for even faster data transfer and thus enables to pave the way for new application areas such as radar systems with higher frequencies than conventional radar."
