Atmel to Present at the ISSCC
San Jose, California (ots/PRNewswire)
- Atmel Presents an All Format Blue and Red Laser DVD Front-End Digital Signal Processing System-on-Chip
Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today that it will present its new SoC (System-on-Chip) for an "All Format DVD"(AFDVD)(TM) for consumer electronics and PC market at the upcoming International Solid-State Circuits Conference which is held in San Francisco on February 7-9, 2006.
Atmel's AT78C4050 "All Format DVD" (AFDVD) system-on-chip is the first DVD front-end device that integrates PRML data channel, DVD ECC, CD CIRC C3, buffer management, DVD CD 1.7PP, EFM+, EFM Endec and ATAPI interface logic all on a single chip. The AT78C4050 is Atmel's high-integration, high-performance single-chip solution for DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW and next generation DVD products for both formats of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. It integrates all required components for a DVD and CD rewritable drive as well as DVD recorder.
Atmel's AT78C4050SoC is backward compatible with every format that uses a red laser and can achieve disc read and write speeds of up to 16x and CD-ROM disc read and write speeds of up to 54x. The AT78C4050 for blue laser DVDs can implement speeds of up to 8x making it an ideal system-on-chip for use in the next generation of DVD products including both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats which use the blue-laser-based technology.
"There are technical differences between the two formats, but they share a similar copy protection and video compression scheme," said Mehdi Bathaee, General Manager of the Network Storage Products at Atmel. "An optimum solution for designing the AT78C4050 was to use the common features between the standards in order to develop an AFDVD (SoC) for HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and DVD/CD red laser recording systems."
The International Solid-State Circuits Conference is the foremost global forum for presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and Systems-on-a-Chip. The conference offers a unique opportunity for engineers working at the cutting edge of IC design to maintain technical currency, and to network with leading experts. "As a member of the IEEE, we look forward to sharing our design information at the ISSCC in February and enabling engineers and designers around the world to take advantage of Atmel's breakthrough design for the next generation of the blue-laser DVD products," said Mr. Mehdi Bathaee.
