Atmel Extends Its Digital Audio Solutions Adding USB High Speed and OTG to a MP3/WMA Decoder

Nantes, France (ots/PRNewswire)

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a global leader in the
development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions,
announced today the availability of the AT85C51SND3 single-chip
digital music player for high-volume markets such as MP3/WMA music
players, mobile phones and car audio systems.
The AT85C51SND3 implements a dual-processor architecture with a
proprietary Digital Signal Processor optimized for audio processing
and an 8-bit 8051, processing core for controlling the Man-Machine
Interface. This architecture is optimized to deliver the processing
performance required by the target systems: compute efficiently the
variety of decompression algorithms and manage all the control and
interface functions to achieve a cost-effective system-on-chip (SoC).
The AT85C51SND3 can be used as a stand-alone player or inserted in
a more complex system such as a mobile phone or a car audio system,
in that case, an available high-speed parallel interface is able to
connect to the base-band or host processors.
Special attention has been paid to power consumption to meet the
requirements of portable battery- operated applications. The code
density and the performance of the audio DSP allow the AT85C51SND3 to
consume less than 35 mA for a complete player in MP3 play mode.
The AT85C51SND3 supports all the leading digital music formats
including MP3, WMA and OGG thus providing high-quality audio playback
for portable devices like music players.
The AT85C51SND3 includes two major features for up-to-date
players: USB On-The-Go (OTG) and OLED color screen control. On-chip
high-speed USB enables faster transfer rates and the USB OTG
functions allow end-users to easily play their music files by
connecting any standard USB key to applications such as MP3 players.
The AT85C51SND3 device can support on OLED display with up to 320x256
pixels and 260,000 colors. Animation, games and JPEG or motion JPEG
can then be very easily displayed giving added value to the end user
application with virtually no additional cost. In addition, a
full-featured audio codec allows audio playback from FM line-in or an
digital audio processor to a volume controlled line-out or headphone
amplifier. Recording in Wave or ADPCM format is also possible from
line-in or microphone input.
With the AT85C51SND3, music can be played from NAND Flash,
MultiMediaCard(TM) (MMC), Xd-Picture Card(TM), Secure Digital Card or
SmartMedia(R) allowing data storage at a low cost.
The AT85C51SND3 can operate at 1.8, 3.0 or 5V supply and is
available in three different options:
1.) AT85C51SND3B1, Standard Version, 2.) AT85C51SND3B2
incorporating a high quality 16-bit audio digital-to-analog converter
(DAC) and 3.) AT85C51SND3B3 incorporating a DC/DC converter and a
high-quality 16-bit audio DAC. These options allow designers to
eliminate external components and achieve a more compact system at a
reduced cost.
A full range of development tools are available to support the
AT85C51SND3 and industry-standard 8051 compilers can be used. The
emulation can be done with On-Chip-Debug and Keil(TM) uVision. Atmel
offers the AT85DVK-07, a development kit for US$500, which includes a
full-featured board and a library of firmware. The AT85RFD-07, a
tiny player reference design, is available for US$150.
The AT85C51SND3 is available in BGA and QFP 100-pin packages or
die in an industrial temperature range. Samples are now available.
Mass production will start in June 2006.
The AT85C51SND3B1 standard version is priced at US$4 for
100,000-unit quantity.
