Amulet's GUI IP Targets Atmel's Customizable MCU
Santa Clara, California (ots/PRNewswire)
ARM Developers' Conference -- Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdq: ATML) today announced that Amulet Technologies has chosen to implement its graphic user interface (GUI) IP on the company's AT91CAP7 ARM7(TM)-based customizable microcontroller.
Amulet Technologies develops dedicated graphic user interface (GUI) microcontrollers with a built-in graphical operating system, called Graphical OS in Silicon. Amulet's ICs and IP are used to add displays to new or legacy consumer end-products.
Amulet will license its GUI IP for implementation in ARM7-based SoCs, including Atmel's AT91CAP7S customizable microcontroller. The AT91CAP7S device is a standard ARM7-based MCU with a metal programmable (MP) block that can be used to implement unique peripheral sets and coprocessors, including Amulet's GUI coprocessor. The resulting customized processor is a system-on-chip solution, tailored precisely for the customer's application, with unit pricing comparable to that of an off-the-shelf MCU.
"Amulet's IP is a key enabling technology with CAP(TM) for markets like white goods, which use legacy 8-bit MCUs to run their application," commented Jay Johnson, Atmel's Marketing Director for CAP products. "It's more than just an ASIC IP block that was proven on CAP. It's all about the ability to customize a standard ARM(R) micro with this unique combination of hardware and software IP."
Ken Klask, Amulet's CEO commented, "Offering our GUI IP on Atmel's CAP7 expands our reach to products that need capabilities that are not offered in standard microcontroller products. Unlike other standard microcontrollers, CAP's Metal Programmable Block also allows us to quickly and easily create variations of our standard products that are tailored to suit the unique interface requirements of our customer's end products."
Availability
Atmel provides an emulation board for CAP7 designs that includes the ARM7 core, peripherals and an FPGA for the implementation and functional verification of the Amulet IP, using standard third-party FPGA design tools. Atmel "personalizes" CAP7 devices directly from the FPGA netlist developed on the development board.
