The city of Bento Goncalves, located in southern Brazil in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, was founded by Italian immigrants. Besides being located in one of the most beautiful regions of the country where temperatures are mild, Bento Goncalves is well known nationally for the quality of its furniture industry.
The city of 100,000 is a major national milling center, with 350 industries and employing more than 10,000 people. The state of Rio Grande do Sul has 3,200 companies and 35,000 collaborators, while Brazil has 13,500 companies and 250,000 direct jobs. The sector is characterized by a focus on quality (in new machinery, design, training, new materials and accessories) and an increase in exports, with the United States, Argentina, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and others as chief clients.
With this focus on constant development, the Furniture Industries Association of the State of Rio Grande do Sul -- Movergs -- has hosted the Machines, Raw Material and Accessories Fair for the Furniture Industry -- FIMMA BRASIL -- in the city of Bento Goncalves every other year since 1993. Today the event is one of the sixth largest in the world.
During the 2003 show, 621 vendors exhibited over a 50,000 square-meter area in the city's Parque dos Eventos -- the largest air-conditioned exhibition center in Brazil. Of the variety of companies that participated, 425 were Brazilian and 196 from 20 other countries. A total 35,000 furniture industry professionals visited the show. Organizers estimate that the volume of business generated by the event was around USUSD$250 million dollars, including post-show activity.

The European Federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers -- EUMABOIS -- headquartered in Italy, is the umbrella organization for 12 associations representing the largest machine and accessories manufacturers in the European wood industry. Approximately 800 industries are associated with Eumabois, whose production level in 2002 reached E$5.32 billion. FIMMA BRASIL is the only trade show in Latin America that has the support of this important organization.
