Following a Successful Evaluation, Copenhagen Transport Authority Finalises Contract with Motorola
Copenhagen, Denmark (ots/PRNewswire)
Motorola (NYSE:MOT) and the Danish TETRA Operator - TetraNet - have finalized the first phase of the new radio and data communication solution for more than 1200 buses in the greater Copenhagen area.
Motorola has completed the roll out of the next-generation communication system delivering a digital radio communication network to the Greater Copenhagen Area. The signing of the contract marks the beginning of a long-term relationship with Hovedstadens Udviklings Råd (HUR), Greater Copenhagen Transport Authority.
Greater Copenhagen Transport Authority (HUR) are the first users on Denmark's new TETRA Network delivering safe and reliable digital radio communication. HUR and Motorola signed a six-year agreement in 2003 for a TETRA IP radio and data communications solution including equipment, airtime and maintenance. The airtime services are supplied and operated by TetraNet.
Johannes Sloth, executive director for the Greater Copenhagen Transport Authority (HUR) said, "Since we have a need to look many years ahead, we have focused on investing in the newest and best solution in the market. We have that with our new TETRA system, which has been received very well by the drivers during the test phase. With the new system we have a secure future-proof IT-platform for our communication and traffic control, meaning better and more efficient bus operations for our customers."
Bo Wassberg, country manager of Motorola Denmark and managing director of TetraNet added, "With HUR we have demonstrated the flexible possibilities of using TETRA under the license agreement awarded by the Danish authorities. The decision by the Greater Copenhagen Transport Authority (HUR) to use TETRA enables them to benefit from the features and operational security now available to public-safety customers around the world. The operational benefits have already been experienced through the evaluation process prior to contract signing and this network also enhances the safety of the drivers as well as the passengers by secure communication. Our next phase is to promote the network to the public safety users in Denmark and we have an exciting program ahead.
Johannes Sloth added, "The solution will include GPS which provides us with real time information about the bus operations. This facility gives our managers the possibility to act rapidly and efficiently whenever it is needed. Moreover, an existing service with our trunk bus lines showing 'minutes to arrival at bus stops' on the internet or via SMS will be implemented on all bus lines."
The rollout in the greater Copenhagen area completes the first phase of a project migrating voice and data services and helping to provide smoother operations in areas such as resource management, customer information (arrival times, locations) and security systems.
The system provides new opportunities to improve cross communication between different modes of transport, buses, trains and subways, which will set new standards for communication within public transportations.
The rollout to the greater Copenhagen area is a milestone in the establishment of TETRA in Denmark, which has been a key objective since Motorola was awarded the license by the government in October 2001.
Bo Wassberg added, "We are delighted and honored that HUR have given us the responsibility to supply and operate this critical element of a public service and of course we are determined and committed to support HUR. This agreement will provide a platform to demonstrate the benefits of TETRA and digital radio communication to other potential professional user groups and organizations - public as well as private, which will eventually allow a national roll out of the TETRA services".
TetraNet is a majority owned sister company to Motorola Denmark providing professional communication solutions to both public safety users and commercial business customers. Services are based upon a national license to operate a commercial TETRA network within the public safety frequency band 380 -400 MHz.
