Automotive supplier ElringKlinger AG will be contributing to the SafeBatt
research consortium, whose aim is to further improve the overall safety of
battery technology for hybrid and electric vehicles. SafeBatt is
committed to implementing active and passive measures targeted at the
respective battery components for the purpose of enhancing the safety
of lithium-ion batteries. First and foremost, ElringKlinger will be
looking to contribute its expertise in the field of cell contact
systems, with a particular focus on evaluating and integrating sensor
technology.
Bringing together fifteen partners from the German automobile and
automotive supply industry as well as from the scientific community,
the joint initiative will be focusing on further improving the
reliability and intrinsic safety of lithium-ion batteries deployed in
hybrid vehicles and pure electric cars.
The German government has selected SafeBatt as one of nine lighthouse
projects of the National Electric Mobility Platform. The Federal
Ministry of Education and Research is injecting funds of EUR 19
million in total. SafeBatt commenced on July 1, 2012, and is scheduled
for completion on June 30, 2015.
The partners contributing to the project are BASF SE, BMW AG, Daimler
AG, Deutsche ACCUmotive GmbH & Co.KG, ElringKlinger AG, Evonik
Litarion GmbH, Infineon Technologies AG, Li-Tec Battery GmbH, SGS
Germany GmbH, Volkswagen AG, Wacker Chemie AG, the Institute for
Chemical Technology of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Technical
University of Braunschweig with the Institute for Particle Technology
iPAT, the Technical University of Munich with its Department for
Electrical Energy Storage Technology and the University of Münster
with its battery research center MEET.
E-Mobility division at ElringKlinger
Automotive supplier ElringKlinger AG has been evolving its E-Mobility
division over the past three years and currently employs around sixty-
five specialist staff in this area. Operating from a new production
line at its site in Dettingen/Erms, ElringKlinger has been supplying
cell contact systems since as early as 2011. These mass-produced
systems connect the various cells used in lithium-ion batteries. As
part of numerous development projects, the company is currently
working on durable, high-performance solutions for the connection of
both cylindrical and prismatic cells in battery stacks. Employing
6,076 people at 41 sites around the globe, the ElringKlinger Group
recorded sales of EUR 1,032.8 million in fiscal 2011.
