init innovation in traffic systems AG and its cooperation partner Electrical Contracting Co. L.L.C. Dubai (a company of Fahad A. Alnafisi & Sons Group) have won a tender put out by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai. Under the contract, the Karlsruhe-based telematics specialist will provide a telematics system required for the set-up of a local public transportation system in the U.A.E. The appropriate "letter of acceptance" has now been signed and the specifics of the contract will be established in the next few weeks.
Among other aspects, the tender includes the equipment of over 1,300 buses with on-board computers and the set-up of a fleet management and information system. The order volume allocated to init is expected to be in the double-digit million euro range and will thus be the biggest individual contract in company history.
Over the next four years, the Arabian Emirate of Dubai plans to invest more than 5 billion euros setting up a local public transportation system which will include buses, water taxis and a metro. Responsible for the planning and implementation of all transportation and traffic investments is the state-owned RTA. The RTA had explicitly been given instructions by the government to establish a local public transportation system by 2010, the quality and service of which was to be on a par with international standards and indeed was to raise the bar in the world.
The individual components for this system thus had to meet the most stringent requirements and accordingly, underwent an appropriately exacting selection process. Winning this tender is thus a confirmation for init of the superior technological efficiency of its products. At the same time, Dubai will be an international reference project that will pave the way beyond the Arabian region.
The Dubai contract has raised the order volume of init to more than 90 million euros. Consequently, the anticipated increase in sales for 2008 is already largely guaranteed.
