HPI Research School offers ten new scholarships to young scientists

Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) has announced that it will be offering scholarships to ten new researchers at its international Research School. Beginning in the upcoming winter semester, the young researchers will be joining the current 25-member team at the Potsdam Research School. Qualified candidates, who are planning a PhD or who already hold one, may submit their application until August 15th to the HPI Research School (www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/research_school)
The HPI Research School, with its branches at the University of Cape Town, South Africa (eight researchers), the Technion in Haifa, Israel (fourteen researchers), and the University of Nanjing, China (nine researchers), is dedicated to the field of "Service-Oriented Systems Engineering." The scholarship holders investigate this comprehensive topic area from the perspective of their individual disciplinary backgrounds. Based on the HPI model, introduced in 2005, the junior researchers are mentored by all professors rather than only by one.
"This enables each of our PhD students to get to know the problem areas, conceptual models, and approaches of the other disciplines," explained HPI Director Prof. Christoph Meinel, pointing out one of the fundamental advantages. This further helps support content-based communication and fruitful collaboration with other researchers and experts.
The research field "Service-Oriented Systems Engineering" focuses on - to put it simply - loosely interlinked service programs that exchange data in a standardized way. They are gradually replacing the previously used, closely interconnected, software applications and processes. "In the event of change, a flexible reconfiguration can be carried out and the necessity of essential, expensive reprogramming prevented," said Prof. Andreas Polze, coordinator of the Research School.
PhD students at the HPI Research School work on research questions, for example those pertaining to architectures, modeling, and the security engineering of service-oriented systems. Furthermore, they also deal with fundamentals such as the self-adaptive management of services at the OS level or questions involving the use of services in the fields of adaptive process management, service composition, and process design. The areas of 3D computer graphics, geoinformatics, and human-computer interaction offer a wide range of interesting applications for service-oriented systems and are part of the scope of research at the HPI Research School.
Applications must be submitted by August 15th of the respective calendar year. Positions are usually available at the beginning of October. Please send applications to the following e-mail address: research-school-application@hpi.uni-potsdam.de
On 20th and 21st of June 2013 the international scientists of the four locations of the HPI Research School at Cape Town, Haifa, and Nanjing are meeting for their annual scientific symposium. Please find all information on the HPI website: http://ots.de/JMF8W
