The word "Switzerland" evokes images of secretive Banks, cheese, chocolate...and of course expensive mechanical luxury watches; especially so in spring, when the BaselWorld opens its doors to the worlds largest watch- and jewelry fair and when everybody's conversation focuses on such vital issues as the question which brand has the most expensive and most complicated Tourbillon watch this year.
To present modern, life-style (digital, ouach!) timepieces in the midst of an incredible glitter takes courage and irony; Ventura does it with panache.
Having established its own credibility and competence with traditional mechanical chronometers, Ventura today is focused on producing luxury, Swiss made digital watches; the company develops and manufactures its own "movements" (actually nothing really moves in them) and proudly calls itself "the only Swiss manufacture électronique".
Well known designers such as Hannes Wettstein and Paolo Fancelli not only "dress-up" the standard movements used by the vast majority of Swiss brands; at Ventura, they create a symbiosis of form, functionality, ergonomics, to which the custom-made movement is adapted.
The result? Strikingly different, futuristic timepieces! No wonder that Hollywood has discovered Ventura; the v-tec Sigma was recently selected for a side-role in Nicolas Cage's latest action movie "Bangkok dangerous" and Stars are turning "digital".
Asked if his concept has a chance of survival within the current mechanical mainstream, Pierre Nobs, founder and CEO of Ventura answers: "The traditional watches differentiate largely by brand and there are just too many of them; it's like more and more of the same thing and people start to get tired. Trendy individuals like to go against the stream but they want image and quality; Ventura offers both."
At this Year's BaselWorld, Ventura brings out two very different, very cool models, the v-tec Zeta by Paolo Fancelli and the v-tec Kappa by Hannes Wettstein, both priced between 1'300 to 1'600 Euro (1'700 to 2'000 US$) More information at www.ventura.ch.
