pharmaceuticals/Safe medication therapy
Effective immediately, ifap Service-Institut für Ärzte und Apotheker GmbH, a subsidiary of CompuGROUP Holding AG, will be supporting clinics in their efforts to prevent undesirable medication incidents (UMI). The i:fox® digital therapy assistant calls attention to potential risks associated with drug prescriptions and helps reduce both costs and complications.
Medication therapy is always a high-risk process. Between 5 and 10 percent of all hospital admissions are attributable to UMI. And clinics are no exception. Effective immediately, the i:fox® therapy assistant developed by ifap, which is already firmly established in the primary care sector, will be available to clinics as well. i:fox® has already been integrated into the ifap index® KLINIK drug database currently in use at numerous clinics.
All patient data of relevance to safety are collected in the patient files comprised within the i:fox® system, to include acute and long-term diagnoses, allergies and medications administered at admission. Prescriptions and medication regimes are then checked against all available data. i:fox® reviews prescriptions for the purpose of identifying interactions, counter indications, duplicate prescriptions, allergy risks, nutritional influences and risks for pregnant patients. The computed risk factor is then displayed via the i:fox® safety icon quickly in an easily interpretable colour-coded form. The i:fox® library also provides physicians and hospital pharmacists with valuable additional information, such as suggestions for less risky alternative therapies and indicators of typical symptoms of reciprocal effects.
In this way, i:fox® provides clinic physicians to receive the information they need to prescribe the right medications for their patients at the right time. The results of the risk assessment can be printed out for purposes of documentation or transmission to other healthcare providers. i:fox® is kept current through quarterly updates and online releases as needed.
"According to experts, inpatient treatment in response to UMI in Germany generates costs in the six-digit range. With i:fox®, we now also offer clinics a decision-support system that provides safety-relevant information based on patient health files. In this way, we provide active support for clinic physicians in their efforts to ensure patient safety and reduce costs", explains Dr. Christian Bruer, Director of Marketing and Sales at ifap. "As a CompuGROUP subsidiary, we are also committed to the corporate goal of increasing the efficiency of the healthcare system by 15% with the aid of intelligent software. With i:fox®, we have made significant progress toward achieving that objective."
