annual report
12.04.2010
The Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG can look back on a successful 2009 business year: with an annual profit of CHF 1.2 million, the company has achieved the third best result in its history. The basis for this excellent result can be particularly attributed to the extremely pleasing development of the Schynige Platte Railway, which for the first time achieved a traffic income of over CHF 3.5 million. The new positioning as a nostalgic cogwheel railway introduced two years ago has made an important contribution to this success. The starting signal is now sounding for major investment in the Schynige Platte Railway, the CHF 7.5 million extension of the Schynige Platte Mountain Hotel. From the beginning of the 2011 summer season, our guests will be able to enjoy the amenities of a totally renovated mountain hotel with seating for almost 700 guests. Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG ended 2009 rather less successfully than in the previous year but better than expected in view of the difficult market situation with the global financial crisis and swine flu. At CHF 9.2 million, traffic income was 2.4% lower than the record figure of the previous year. Major future-oriented investment projects have been completed with the redesign of Grindelwald railway station, the putting into operation of the hydraulic lift bridge in Wilderswil and the purchase of the station reception building at Interlaken Ost railway station.
