In 2010, the Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG achieved a traffic income of 13 million francs, the highest in its history. This resulted in a profit of 0.7 million francs.
The good result of the railway company, which operates the Bernese Oberland Railway and Schynige Platte Railway, is above all down to a very good year for the Schynige Platte Railway, which achieved a profit of 1.1 million francs in 2010. The Bernese Oberland Railway recorded a loss of 379,000 francs.
Both railways achieved record traffic incomes. Although the Schynige Platte Mountain Hotel was undergoing renovation and extension, meaning guests had only limited use of its facilities, the Schynige Platte Railway achieved a traffic income of 3.6 million francs, an increase of 1.3 per cent over the previous year. The Bernese Oberland Railway was able to increase its traffic income by 3.0 per cent to 9.4 million francs. Although many groups from Asia stayed away because of the financial and economic crisis, the railway company was able to boost the group-travel business in 2010. The Bernese Oberland Railway recorded an increase of over 50 per cent in group travel. In contrast, the subsidy from the federation and canton was reduced by 4.5 per cent in comparison to the previous year.
