The advancement of spectator protection behind the fences of motorsport racing circuits was high on the agenda of this year's Award judges at the Professional MotorSport World Expo. The new and innovative Geobrugg Debris Fence was named "Safety Initiative of the Year 2010" during the award ceremony on November 16th in Cologne, Germany.
Wolfgang Sievernich, editor of motorsport-guide, was one of many Awards judges who praised Geobrugg's innovative debris fence. He said, "This Swiss company has enabled the level of passive safety at racetracks to be increased, further protecting the spectators behind the fence. When one compares the new solutions with those already in the market, one ought to make fences that meet the new performance standards compulsory around the world."
Jochen Braunwarth, Business Development Manager of Geobrugg comments: "As a newcomer in professional motor sport, Geobrugg is very proud to receive this award. Coming from the field of natural hazard protection, we had the experience and confidence of successfully stopping high energy impacts with our barriers, such as a 16 ton concrete block in free fall from a height of 32 m impacting at 90 km/h (5,000 kJ impact energy). We have worked hard to transfer our leading-edge core competences with rockfall barriers in the mountains to the world of professional motor sports. A series of 1:1 live crash tests of the new Geobrugg Debris Fence at the Swiss Dynamic Test Centre (DTC) with the FIA test sphere as well a crash car have proven the advancement in passive safety in line with the FIA Institute's test specifications."
Atlanta Motorsports Park (AMP) will be the first to implement the new performance standard in spectator protection by installing the Geobrugg Debris Fence at their new Herman Tilke designed track in Dawsonville, Georgia, USA. Racing at AMP is expected to begin in February of 2011.
