Air Berlin, the second largest German airline company, got off to a good start in the new year. In January 2009, Air Berlin realized a double-digit increase in its revenue per available seat kilometer ("Yield per ASK"). Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, revenue per available seat kilometer increased from 4.06 to 4.99 Eurocents, i.e. an increase of 23 percent. Fleet capacity utilization improved by 0.3 percentage points to reach 69.4 percent (2008: 69.1 percent). Although capacity for the month of January was reduced by 4.9 percent, the number of passengers decreased by only 4.5 percent, reaching 1,701,780 passengers (2008: 1,781,556).
