Company Information/Traffic Figures April 2010
The volcanic outbreak in Iceland, which resulted in a temporary flight ban, has left its mark on the April 2010 traffic figures of Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest airline company. The cancellation of more than 3,500 flights resulted in a capacity reduction of 550,000 seats. Although flight operations were gradually resumed in the week starting 19 April, the continued uncertainty among potential passengers led to a reduction in the number of bookings. This resulted in a lower average revenue (Yields) and in a lower capacity utilization rate, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
In April 2010, Air Berlin welcomed 2,065,194 passengers on board, i.e. 16.5 percent less than in the corresponding month of the previous year (April 2009: 2,472,453 passengers, including those traveling on the acquired TUIfly routes). Fleet capacity utilization decreased to 72.6 percent, i.e. by 3.7 percentage points (April 2009: 76.3 percent). Capacity decreased by 12.3 percent. Revenue per available seat kilometer (ASK) decreased by 6.1 percent to 5.55 Eurocents (April 2009: 5.91 Eurocents).
For the period from January to April 2010, Air Berlin transported a total of 8,300,369 passengers (including those traveling on the acquired TUIfly routes), i.e. 3.1 percent less than in the corresponding period of the previous year (2009: 8,562,138 passengers). Accumulated capacity decreased slightly (- 0.8 percent). Fleet capacity utilization for the first four months of the year decreased by 1.6 percentage points to 71.2 percent (2009: 72.8 percent).
