KfW IPEX-Bank, BayernLB and LBBW finance expansion of Germany's largest data centre for T-Systems

- 45,000 new servers for the data centre in Biere/Saxony-Anhalt - Banking consortium provides financing for second construction phase - Inclusion of KfW Energy Efficiency Programme
KfW IPEX-Bank, BayernLB and Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) are jointly supporting IT service provider T-Systems in the expansion of Germany's largest and most high-performance data centre in Biere/Saxony-Anhalt. The banking consortium, led by BayernLB, is providing a syndicated loan in triple-digit million euros for this purpose. The three banks already jointly financed the first construction phase, which was successfully completed in 2014.
The 30,000 server storage capacity currently available at the data centre will soon be fully utilised. Especially in the wake of the NSA scandal, many German companies prefer to store their data with German rather than foreign service providers. In addition, major corporations such as SAP or Huawei are reserving extensive storage capacities. The expansion of the data centre will increase capacity by 45,000 servers by 2018. The most stringent requirements in terms of data security and energy efficiency will be fulfilled in the process. This has made possible the incorporation of funds from the KfW Energy Efficiency Programme in the financing. The loan tenor is 17 years. The financing will have a structure similar to that of a leasing arrangement and be the responsibility of Hannover Leasing.
"Along with our consortium partners BayernLB and LBBW, we are contributing to the realisation of one of the most prestigious IT projects in Germany today," said Markus Scheer, member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank, on the occasion of the signing. "The project simultaneously combines the expansion of state-of-the-art data infrastructure with the implementation of energy efficiency measures."
Alexander von Dobschütz, Head of Global Structured & Trade Finance, at BayernLB: "We are very pleased to be able to jointly support T-Systems in this major expansion of the data centre. By financing the data centre, we are once again proving our structuring expertise and our solid position as a corporate finance specialist in Germany."
"LBBW has been supporting companies for many years with custom-tailored financing products. We are happy to support our client T-Systems in this significant investment with an appropriately structured financing concept," said Andreas Sahl, Executive Vice President, at LBBW.
Reinhard Clemens, CEO of T-Systems and member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Telekom, commented: "Our data centre in Biere shows that high-tech projects like this one are possible in Germany and that, in global comparison, we are at the fore. The need for cloud solutions that comply with German data protection legislation has increased rapidly, and Biere has established itself so well on both the national and international market that the data centre is already full. For this reason, we are very glad to be taking this big step in the direction of Biere 2. The financing for it from the banking consortium that was established and proved its worth in the first construction phase is a key element."
