Latest special coin to be issued: the new 25-franc gold coin pays homage to earlier gold coins that were never brought into circulation
On 1 November 2024, the Federal Mint Swissmint is issuing a 25-franc gold coin in homage to the 20- and 25-franc gold coins that were never brought into circulation in 1871 and 1955–1959.
Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name "Swiss special coins". The 25-franc gold coin reflects the historical values of past gold coins from the years 1871 and 1955–1959, which never came into circulation. This coin marks a milestone in the history of Swissmint and creates something unique – a link between past and present that gets more than just collectors' hearts beating faster.
The special coins bring our country's history and memories to life
The obverse of the 5.64g special coin, in 900 gold alley, is modelled on the historic 20-franc gold coin from 1871, the year modern coinage was introduced in Switzerland. It depicts the Swiss coat of arms with a cross of five equal squares on blossoming Alpine rose branches. The inscription "SWITZERLAND" appears above, and below that the year 2024 elegantly completes the coin's timeless design. The reverse of the coin features the inscription "CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA" and the face value of CHF 25, in keeping with the design of the 1955 coin. A small Swiss cross below the figure adds a decorative touch. Particularly noteworthy items are the inscription around the edge, "DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT", and the 13 stars that this coin bears as the first of the modern 25-franc gold coins.
"We wanted to create a coin that not only reflects the symbolic value of old coins, but also draws on the traditions of earlier designs. That is why we integrated elements of historical gold coins into our design, combining old and new in a special way", says Jan Niklas Betz, Deputy General Manager and Head of Marketing/Sales at Swissmint.
5,000 coins will be issued in proof quality and will be available from 8am on Friday 1 November, from Swissmint's official online shop and from selected coin dealers and banks. Starting in 2026, it is planned to issue the 25-franc gold coin each year in uncirculated quality with the same design, making it a permanent addition to any coin collector's collection.
Each special coin is a miniature work of art
The Federal Mint Swissmint produces Swiss franc coins on behalf of the Swiss Confederation. These have been created in the heart of Switzerland since 1855, and in the popular Kirchenfeld district of Bern since 1906. Since 1936, Swissmint has also minted special coins to commemorate important historical and cultural events and to honour prominent figures. Each of these special coins is a miniature work of art in a unique tradition of artistry and craftsmanship.
