Exclusive presentation of the latest special coin: After 100 years, the CHF 100 gold Vreneli returns
At the World Money Fair, Switzerland will present the latest special coin to mark an anniversary: On 1 July 2025, Swissmint will issue the new coin “100 Years 100-Franc Vreneli” – in homage to the original issue of 1925.
Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name "Swiss special coins". The issuance of the new gold Vreneli in homage to the 1925 original represents a significant milestone in the history of Swiss coinage. The coin will be launched exclusively at the 2025 World Money Fair.
Swissmint to be guest of honour at World Money Fair
On 1 July 2025, the 100th anniversary of the CHF 100 gold Vreneli will be marked by the issuance of a commemorative coin. This special coin 100 Years 100-Franc Vreneli echoes the design and history of the original and pays homage to the rich tradition of Swiss coin art.
The anniversary coin was presented today exclusively at the World Money Fair in Berlin, the world's largest coin fair. As this year's guest of honour, Swissmint chose a very special location in which to unveil this historic coin.
The special coins bring our country's history and memories to life
The new gold Vreneli sets another milestone in the history of Swiss coinage. The gold Vreneli from 1925 is regarded as Switzerland's largest and most beautiful gold coin. A number of stories surround the 5,000 coins minted at that time, 1,000 of which were melted down again. They now fetch up to CHF 20,000 at auction.
As in 1925, the gold Vreneli is made of a 900 gold alloy, has a diameter of 35mm and weighs 32.258g. On the obverse, the new gold Vreneli contains echoes of the original, combining the radiating Swiss cross above the Swiss alps with gentians and alpine roses. The image of Vreneli portrays her gazing into the future, and links old and new history. Her head is crowned with a laurel wreath as a symbol of wisdom and triumph, and the edelweiss as a symbol of Switzerland. On the right, the anniversary dates are stamped, surrounded by the words "CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA".
On the reverse, the face value of 100 francs can be seen on the left half, while the original 100-franc Vreneli bust is depicted on the right half. Additional gentians and alpine roses complete the design. The signature of the artist Chiara Principe and a "B" for Bern are finely visible.
"The gold Vreneli is probably the best known of the Swiss gold coins. As this CHF 100 gold coin celebrates its centenary, we wanted to uphold tradition by creating a new and unique collector's item that would appeal to everyone. The World Money Fair is the ideal location to celebrate the coin with all due ceremony and present it to as wide a public as possible", said Jan Niklas Betz, Deputy General Manager and Head of Marketing/Sales at Swissmint.
The coin is being released in a strictly limited issue of 2500, priced at CHF 3500. It will be available from 1 July 2025, from Swissmint's official online shop.
