Exchange for Nature: Africa and the Caribbean Youth Programme launched at the UN CITES 12th Conference of the Parties
The "exchange for nature" programme designed to unite youth from around the world who are working for a better environment and the survival of the planet"s rich biodiversity was launched in Santiago during the CITES 12th meeting of the parties with sponsorship from the Swiss Coalition for Whales in the presence of several Heads of the CITES delegations.
The project has the full support of Paul Chabeda, UNEP Nairobi and Nelson Andrade Colmanares of UNEP, Caribbean who pledge their full support.
The programme is designed to train youth so that in the not too distant future they can share and understand problems and policies that will face them in the governance of our limited natural resources. Humans and wildlife around the world are confronted on a daily basis with dilemmas they have problems resolving.
The youths involved in the exchange both sides of the Atlantic will be part of a varied programme.
The Species Survival Network (SSN) Chairman Will Travers, also President of the Born Free Foundation in the UK and Dr. Winnie Kiiru of the Kenya office of Born Free represent the African chapter of this initiative with Mona George Dill, Director of the Commonwealth of Dominica Springfield Research Centre, Madeleine de Grandmaison, the ECCEA Vice President, also Curator of the Museum of Natural History Martinique and the University Antilles Guyanne form the core group of the programme initiated by the Head of Operations of the ECCEA, Lesley Sutty in 2001.
