This year Banca del Gottardo celebrates its first 50 years in business. In honour of this special occasion, the Bank has decided to present a gift to Lugano, which has been home to the Bank since its foundation and has watched it grow to become an integral part of the local economy. The gift was not a random choice. Banca del Gottardo wanted to emphasise its cultural commitment, which is reflected in the fascinating exhibitions it offers to the public via its cultural foundation, Galleria Gottardo, as well as its art collection, which is considered the most complete and important of post-WWII Swiss art.
In this context the Bank is gifting the City of Lugano with the new catalogue raisonné of the collection of ethnic art at the Museum of Cultures, a collection of undeniable international importance donated to the Museum by the Ticino-born artist Serge Brignoni.
This publication makes a significant contribution to local cultural activity and is designed to foster dialogue between culture and City, between Banca del Gottardo and Lugano.
At the inauguration of the exhibition, "Patong. Great Figures Carved by the People of Borneo", Felix R. Ehrat, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banca del Gottardo, presented the new two-volume catalogue raisonné of the Brignoni Collection to Mayor Giorgio Guidici. The first general volume includes a series of essays on the specific nature and importance of the Brignoni Collection. It is divided into colour images and written sections that show and describe the most interesting works in the Collection itself, which come primarily from Oceania and Indonesia. The second volume will be presented at the close of the "Patong" exhibition, on August 23. This book is aimed at a specialist audience as it contains an inventory of all the 650 works of art that comprise the Museum of Cultures collection, including essays on scientific cataloguing principles and methods. Both volumes are available in English and Italian.
Felix R. Ehrat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banca del Gottardo: "I am greatly honoured to present the City with this important work which focuses on the important collection of ethnic art at the Lugano Museum of Cultures and explains its significance. With this valuable contribution Banca del Gottardo on its 50th anniversary wishes not only to thank the City, but also to dedicate the books to the community as a symbol of dialogue and partnership between entrepreneurship, culture and politics; between Banca del Gottardo and the City."
Giorgio Guidici, Mayor of Lugano: "I would like to thank Banca del Gottardo personally and on behalf of the City for this splendid donation. We are grateful to the Bank, which is a valuable asset to the economy of our city and canton. The Bank has been based in our city for 50 years and has placed great value on all aspects of culture throughout this period, to the best of its ability. Moreover, Galleria Gottardo has always presented a wide variety of events that attract great interest and are well attended."
Catalogue: Published by Franco Rogantini, Director of the Galleria Gottardo.
Research and realisation: The two volumes are the result of close collaboration with a team of anthropologists coordinated by the Director of the Museum of Cultures, Francesco Paolo Campione.
