BKW submits retrofit implementation plans
Bern (ots)
BKW AG has today submitted plans to the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) for the implementation of cooling system retrofits at Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM), in compliance with a requirement made by ENSI at the end of 2012.
In its statement on long-term operational safety, ENSI had asked for binding implementation plans for the retrofitting of additional cooling systems, to be submitted by June 30, 2013. As part of these plans ENSI had requested the design and implementation of an additional cooling water supply system operating independently of the river Aare, supplementary to the existing cooling systems. BKW has now filed the documents as required, thus completing a key stage in the planning of the DIWANAS Programme.
The DIWANAS Programme involves the construction of a subterranean groundwater pipeline from the Saanen valley to the site at KKM, the installation of an alternative spent fuel pool cooling system, additional waste heat removal functionality, and an additional building. These measures will increase the safety of KKM even further.
In parallel with these projects, BKW is drawing up extensive documentation for the supervisory board's policy and investment decision expected at the end of 2013, with a view to the continued operation of KKM.
