Phonak has launched a revolutionary new hearing system in the Research and Technology Centre of the European Space Agency. The spectacular event included a live link to outer space as well as an appearance by Buzz Aldrin, second man on the moon and an enthusiastic Savia user.
Phonak, the Switzerland-based developer of technologically leading hearing instruments, has introduced its latest digital hearing system Savia with Digital Bionics in a unique manner last Friday. Savia is the first hearing instrument ever to successfully imitate biological systems, bringing natural, effortless hearing and all-round performance to thousands of individuals with impaired hearing. As launch pad for Savia, with its host of world's first features, the company chose a very appropriate location: the Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. Cutting edge science and technology combined with human expertise allow both, ESA and Phonak, to make a substantial improvement to the quality of life of individuals.
Support from outer space
An unquestionable highlight of Friday's product launch was a live link to the International Space Station (ISS). The audience watched as Russian Cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov conversed with Phonak CEO Valentin Chapero about Savia's revolutionary and unique technology and congratulated all Phonak employees who were following the event in the audience and via webcast on the successful product launch.
Another highlight followed when Buzz Aldrin, member of the first manned lunar landing mission in July 1969, stepped on stage and revealed that he is an enthusiastic Savia user. The 75 year old space pioneer and doctor in astronautics today relies on Savia to fulfil his communication needs on planet earth. He emphasized that Savia is up to the mark: "When your life has depended on effective communication between earth and the moon, your expectations remain extremely high!"
Digital Bionics ignite the hearing revolution
Savia by Phonak is the first hearing instrument ever to implement the unique capabilities of biological systems using state of the art digital technology - Digital Bionics. A unique group of features based on the bionic principle enable wearers to hear as Nature intended, in all situations. This includes successfully rising to major challenges such as understanding speech in echo-filled environments or when there are multiple noise sources. Digital Bionics also ensure that the most sophisticated features of natural hearing, such as the ability to locate sound sources accurately, are restored automatically by Savia. Localization is a key element of what is perceived as natural hearing and biologically speaking is the task of a design masterpiece, the human ear.
A galaxy of possibilities
Savia contains the world's smallest and best-performing microchip to be integrated into a hearing instrument, plus numerous world first features, packaged in super-compact housing with a comfortable, attractive design. Savia is accessible via a wide variety of instruments and feature options. Ultimate convenience is assured as even the tiniest Savia CIC is suitable for remote control operation.
