annual report
15.04.2010
In the 2009 business year, the Jungfrau Railways Group achieved its best result ever. The company surpassed the previous year´s result by 5.5%, accomplishing a record profit of CHF 22.1 million.
The decisive factor for this success lies in the fact that the company was able to confront and weather the difficult circumstances. The fear of swine flu, strong franc and economic crisis led to around 100,000 fewer Asian visitors travelling to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe in comparison to the previous year. Thanks to special offers in Switzerland and Europe, the Jungfrau Railways Group was able to compensate for this drop. Last year, some 651,000 visitors travelled up to Europe´s highest-altitude railway station - 3.7 per cent more than in 2008. At CHF 134.3 million, the group recorded the second highest revenue in its history. At the same time it was possible to reduce personnel costs, resulting in a record profit at the end of the year. Because of this excellent result, the executive board will propose to the AGM a dividend increase from CHF 1.40 to 1.60.
As well as the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe, our other excursion destinations, First, Harder Kulm, Kleine Scheidegg and Winteregg were also well frequented. The Harder railway achieved a record profit and the First aerial cableway recorded the best summer in its history. The winter-sport business also went exceedingly well. The revenue in the whole Jungfrau Region amounted to CHF 44.0 million, only 1.2 per cent behind the record year of 2008.
