The Junior Web Award launched by SWITCH is proving particularly popular. Students are learning about the internet and having a great deal of fun in the process. The island that features in the Junior Web Award was recently baptised and now bears the name of "Green Diamond".
Large numbers of school classes had spent time pondering over a name for the "terra incognita", and then the most popular name was established in a public vote organised by Blick Online. The prize was an Epson EMP-TWD3 projector, which will enable the students to benefit from a genuine cinema-like experience in their classroom. "Green Diamond" was the name that received by far the biggest number of votes. And the winners are primary school class 6b from the Grossacker School in St. Gallen.
"Finding a suitable name took a great deal of effort"
Class teacher Emil Wenk was delighted to be awarded the prize. He will be using the multi-functional Epson home cinema system as frequently as possible in his teaching at the school. The children were also fascinated by this attractive multimedia unit. They were the ones that had engaged in a strenuous brainstorming session. In the final instance, it was a student from Cambodia who had had the idea that the island looked like a green diamond.
Project phase in full swing
Since the SWITCH Junior Web Award was launched in March 2007 an increasing number of students and teachers have been captivated by it. So far, more than 200 school classes have registered for the competition. These are classes from primary schools and level 1 and level 2 secondary schools from all over Switzerland. The students are creating their own websites in the categories of Design/Fun and Theme/Content, which have to be submitted by 15th June 2007. Public voting will then be conducted (16 - 30 June 2007) on the www.juniorwebaward.ch website. The projects will then be submitted to the jury team, made up of members of the "Best-of-Swiss-Web" jury, for a definitive appraisal. The award ceremony will be held on 16 November 2007 in the Zurich Exhibition Halls.
