InfoTech Study Shows 18% Increase in Global IP-PBX Line Shipments - IP-PBX Lines Represent 29% of Total Lines Shipped

According to a new study from InfoTech, a leading market research and consulting firm, global line shipments of IP-PBX systems increased 18% in the third quarter of 2003, compared to the same period a year earlier -- representing 29% of total lines shipped. This gain was not sufficient, however, to offset reduced demand for traditional phone systems, as PBX and Key/Hybrid line shipments declined 31% and 10%, respectively.
"Continued rapid growth in the IP-PBX market indicates that IP telephony is moving out of the pilot and early adopter phase and into the mainstream," said Frank Stinson, program director at InfoTech.
InfoTech's study also found that several manufacturers are contributing to this IP-PBX growth by offering versatile converged systems that can be implemented in TDM, IP, or mixed environments. "Although third-quarter shipments of converged systems increased 41% over last year, many of these systems are actually being deployed in TDM configurations. We don't see a rapid shift in this trend since many businesses still have limited plans for implementing IP telephony or are pursuing a gradual migration away from TDM," added Stinson.
The complete study findings from this research are available from InfoTech's InfoTrack for Global Enterprise Communications program, which provides a comprehensive quarterly view of global and regional shipment activity of the three categories of IP-PBX systems (Telephony-Enabled LAN, IP-Enabled PBX, Converged Systems), as well as traditional PBX and Key/Hybrid systems. This global research and analysis complements InfoTech's InfoTrack for Enterprise Communications program, which has been a leading provider of quarterly vendor shipments, market shares, installed base, and forecasts on the North American market since 1990.
