Gemplus and Orange Present a New SIM-Based Web Server: Mobile Internet Services on the Horizon
Luxembourg and 3gsm World Congress, Cannes (ots/PRNewswire)
- GemXplore Generations, Gemplus' new range of smart cards, delivers a vastly improved mobile Internet experience by enhancing the Graphical User Interface for SIM Based Services using an embedded WEB server
Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 - GEM and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card-based solutions, is announcing the integration of Internet technology into its new GemXplore Generations range of smart cards to deliver an improved mobile Internet experience for Orange customers. GemXplore Generations takes advantage of the significant memory and performance capabilities of Gemplus' new smart cards to store an overview of the Orange mobile Internet portal directly on the SIM, thus improving browsing capability, speed and delivery of new services.
This smart card-based web server brings an improved graphical user-interface to Orange services, which enhances the mobile Internet experience for users and is expected to help drive the adoption of value-added services.
Laurent Coureau, Strategic Advisor, Orange, Technology & Innovation, says: "Using web server features in a smart card is a highly practical way of offering web content as it uses a standard Internet Protocol instead of one that is card specific. This new kind of function of the SIM means that we can offer our customers SIM-based services alongside browsing services in exactly the same way. This new product demonstrate that the SIM is not limited to its current frontiers, allowing future enhancement of the overall look and feel of our Orange services".
End-users will be able to discover new services off-line, which will then lead to greater service adoption and increased revenue for the operator. The SIM server integrates the information selected from Orange World home pages and stores it on the SIM to deliver onto the end user's screen, thus offering a consistent look and feel for mobile Internet services.
"Improving access to mobile Internet-based services enables operators to build their brand and deliver new services to their customers. The SIM has always had a role to play in making services easy to use and brings additional advantages to the Mobile Internet domain in terms of security, portability and service profiling. Our new GemXplore Generations range of smart cards helps to take the mobile Internet experience to the next level - the overall look and feel of SIM based Services is vastly improved but more importantly, we can dynamically upload and deliver new services quickly and securely, thus improving Orange's ability to drive new service uptake via mobile Internet," explains Jean-François Rubon, Director of Product Technical Strategy, Telecom Business Unit, Gemplus.
