Atmel's FingerChip Sensor Enables Enhanced Security for the HP iPAQ hx2700 Series Pocket PC Line
Grenoble, France (ots/PRNewswire)
Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductors, announced today that its AT77C104B FingerChip(R) sensor has been integrated into the new HP iPAQ hx2700 Series Pocket PC. Coupled with enabling third party software, the FingerChip sensor provides users with a secure and convenient way to protect their information without the need to manually enter a password. It can also be used in conjunction with a password for even greater security protection.
"The FingerChip sensor continues demonstrating its unique fit in embedded devices," said David Richard, Atmel Biometrics Marketing Manager. "Its small size allows for a low cost solution, while its robust technology and packaging ensure a truly reliable solution. We will continue to prove our competitiveness in this growing market and we are very proud of our relationship with HP."
Atmel designed the FingerChip sensor to provide a cost-effective, small form factor solution that meets the demand of biometric security for space constrained mobile applications. The FingerChip sensor uses a patented method for imaging the entire finger by "sweeping" it across the sensor. Sweeping captures successive images (slices), applying software to reconstruct the fingerprint. This method allows the space-efficient FingerChip sensor to return a large, high-quality, 500 dots per inch image of the fingerprint. This image is then processed through authentication software, and extracts a template, which is used for fingerprint comparison.
"Our integration of Atmel's biometrics technology into the HP iPAQ hx2700 series Pocket PC is another proof point that security is a key focus for HP and we take great efforts to deliver HP iPAQ mobile devices that meet the security needs of our varied customers," said Michael McNulty, manager of product marketing, Handheld Division, HP.
