Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics
Prime Minister to Open Perimeter Institute in Waterloo
Waterloo, Ontario (ots/PRNewswire)
The Honourable Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada, will officially open the new home of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada on Friday, October 1st at 6:30pm. This is where international scientists are gathering to investigate how nature works at the deepest level.
Attending the official opening this Friday will be Nobel Prize winners Steven Weinberg and Sir Anthony Leggett. Also on hand will be world renowned mathematician and theoretical physicist Sir Roger Penrose from Oxford University and scientists Margaret Geller, Raymond Laflamme, James Hartle and Juan Maldacena among others. Nearly 300 researchers, educators, politicians and industry leaders will all be on hand to launch the new research centre. Perimeter Institute's award winning research facility is the product of a unique private/public partnership spearheaded by Mike Lazaridis, founder and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. He provided CDN$100 million of his personal wealth to seed this centre of long term foundational research in Canada.
The new facility is 65,000 sq. ft. in size and provides scientists with state of the art tools to pursue theories of space, time and matter. Ideas that may one day give rise to new technologies. Much like when Maxwell discovered a unified theory of electricity and magnetism, Marconi applied the ideas to send the first wireless message between continents. The Communications Age was born, changing our lives with radio, TV and now cell phones and wireless internet. That's how understanding breeds innovation. Theoretical physics is at the heart of it.
If you would like a tour of the facility Friday morning at 9:00 or to attend the Opening Ceremonies on Friday evening at 5:00pm, please contact John Matlock, Director of Communications at jmatlock@perimeterinstitute.ca. Perimeter Institute is located at 31 Caroline Street North, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, N2L 2Y5.
