Otis Wins US$23 Million in Contracts for Seoul's Incheon Airport
Farmington, Connecticut (ots/PRNewswire)
Otis has been awarded contracts totaling more than U.S. US$23 million (KRW 26.6 billion) to supply and install 169 elevators, escalators, moving walkways and one central monitoring system for Phase 2 of the Incheon International Airport in South Korea.
The Incheon International Airport, with a total area of 56 million square meters, opened in March 2001 after four and a half years of construction. The airport sits at the center of Northeast Asia's transportation network comprising 51 cities - with populations exceeding 1 million - situated within a 3.5-hour flight radius. Once the four-phase expansion is complete in 2020, the airport will be able to accommodate 530,000 flights, 100 million passengers and 7 million metric tons of cargo per year.
"Otis is pleased to continue its partnership with the South Korean Government and to provide service to a vital airport hub for Northeast Asia," said Otis President Ari Bousbib. "The selection of Otis for the airport expansion means we have met the government's stringent quality standards to safely transport the more than 100 million people who are expected to travel through Incheon International. We appreciate the confidence that the South Korean government has demonstrated in us by once again choosing Otis as its provider of people-moving products."
In Phase 2, Otis will install 55 elevators, 75 escalators, 39 moving walkways and one central monitoring system in Concourse A, one of two passenger terminals at the airport. The central monitoring system will allow Otis and the airport facilities manager to check and monitor the service status for all units in one main center.
"At Incheon International Airport, safety and quality performance are paramount," said TaeJeong Ahn, who heads the airport's maintenance operations. "Given our past experience with Otis in Phase 1, we are confident that Otis' technology, performance and service are an important part of helping us operate the best airport in the world."
In June 1998, Otis won contracts to supply 321 people-moving products, including 106 elevators, 130 escalators, 46 moving walkways and 39 boarding bridges for Phase 1 of the airport project. During that time, Otis field employees worked 296,000 hours accident free.
Otis Elevator Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), is the world's largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators, shuttle systems and moving walkways.
