CompuGROUP Holding AG, one of the world's leading e-health service providers, has been nominated as a candidate for the 2009 dfg Award - the most prestigious award conferred in the healthcare sector.
Germany has one of the best health-care systems in the world. Yet the healthcare market has been in a constant state of flux for years. It is influenced by a number of critical political, structural, medical and economic factors. To be presented for the first time this year, the dfg Award will honour the achievements of business enterprises, corporate bodies and associations devoted to progressive improvement of the healthcare system through innovative action.
CompuGROUP has been nominated as a candidate for this award in Category I - "Innovation" - for its "LeitsymptomNAVIGATOR", a software-based early-detection tool for diseases. The tool is part of the new "e-careNOMIC" product family developed by CompuGROUP for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the healthcare system.
Background: On average, a doctor has only 7.6 minutes consultation time with each patient. Drawing from the huge fund of available medical knowledge and experience, the "LeitsymptomNAVIGATOR" provides physicians precisely the information they need to render a diagnosis within that small window. Based on an analysis of a patient's medical history, doctors are informed immediately about possible disorders and undetected co-morbidities and have immediate access to a complete and transparent overview of the sources from which the information is derived. In this way, the expert system developed by CompuGROUP facilitates the task of reviewing medical histories, relevant literature, diagnostic guidelines and treatment recommendations. In addition to access to medical knowledge, the integration of the tool into the doctor's workflow plays a crucial role in this context. CompuGROUP has the broadest reach within the global healthcare sector and currently serves 330,000 healthcare providers worldwide.
The "LeitsymptomNAVIGATOR" was developed by the CompuGROUP medical team headed by Dr. med. Dierk Heimann. "The most important aspect in my opinion is personal contact between physicians and patients. We would all like to have more time than we now have for our patients. Thus our hope is that the "LeitsymptomNAVIGATOR" will support my colleagues in precisely those areas where software analysis can help - so that they have more time for what really matters - attending to patients' needs", says Heimann, Medical Director of CompuGROUP Holding AG, the advantages of the new product.
"Having said that", Heimann adds, "our goal is to use intelligent software in order to provide physicians only the information they really need in a given situation. No one can ever have all of the information relevant to a specific patient whenever it is needed. But that is precisely what intelligent databases do. And we use them for that purpose alone. We are firmly convinced that this information service will become the third key pillar of the healthcare system along with medication and medical technology."
The six dfg Awards will be presented to the winners at the castle in Wiesbaden- Biebrich on 25 June 2009.
