More than 800,000 visitors again on the Jungfraujoch
The Jungfrau Railway Group can look back on a successful year. For the
second consecutive time, well over 800,000 guests travelled to Europe's
highest-altitude railway station. Excursion traffic to the Jungfraujoch -
Top of Europe continued to reap benefits from the activities of the 2012
centenary year. Despite fewer offers and promotions, the number of visitors
recorded was 823,000 - a mere 1.2 per cent drop compared to the centenary
year, and the second-best result in the railway's over 100-year history.
The overseas markets in particular were pivotal to the continuing high
visitor numbers. The fact that the company has intensively cultivated the
Asian markets and strengthened the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe brand has
paid off.
The other railways in the group also achieved higher passenger frequencies
than last year's. The Harder Railway reported another significant passenger
record, gaining a plus of 17.8 per cent. The First Aerial Cableway
transported 0.5 per cent more guests than in 2012. The Lauterbrunnen-Mürren
Mountain Rail & Cableway achieved an increase in passenger volume of 6.4
per cent.
Thanks to high-capacity snow-making equipment, the Jungfrau Railway Group
was able to launch the 2013/14 season early, offering excellent piste
conditions throughout the group-run area of the Jungfrau Ski Region. The
first facilities opened at the Kleine Scheidegg on 23 November 2013 - one
week earlier than the previous year. Snowfall after Christmas provided
exceptionally good piste conditions and launched the winter season with
days of high visitor frequency over the festive period. The Jungfrau Ski
Region is a cooperative joint product, in which the Jungfrau Railway Group
holds an over 60 per cent share of sales. From the beginning of the season
up to 2 January 2014, the Jungfrau Ski Region recorded 210,000 skier
visits, thus achieving a plus of 12.9 per cent compared to the same period
last year.
