Sailors set sights on Zurich speed record and the LITTLECUP championship in Geneva

Genf (ots)

Landlocked Switzerland hosts one of the most prestigious sailing championships in September when teams from all over the world compete in the 27th edition of the International C Class championship, known as the LITTLECUP. Ahead of the event, Swiss flying catamaran Hydros.ch, sharing many of the same technologies, will attempt to break its own Lake Zurich speed record.

Nine teams from six countries have already registered to take part in the September 12-20 championship on Lake Geneva. Spectators will have the chance to watch ultra-high-tech C-class catamarans race above the water at more than three times the speed of the wind.

The LITTLECUP is organised by Hydros Foundation and the City of Geneva and supported by the Lombard Odier Group. During the previous LITTLECUP held in 2013 in Falmouth, England, the Hydros team represented Switzerland for the first time and finished second.

Following that success, Jérémie Lagarrigue, a Member of the Hydros Foundation, was asked to organise the 2015 LITTLECUP in Geneva.

?Switzerland has always been remarkably innovative and Lake Geneva?s unique sailing conditions have turned the region into a cradle of high-tech technologies,? says Mr Lagarrigue. ?Despite being landlocked, this year Switzerland has the chance to underline its leading-edge expertise on a world stage.?

The Hydros team will also try to break a speed record in the coming weeks on Lake Zurich with its larger, high-tech foiling catamaran, Hydros.ch. The record attempt forms part of a promotional tour for the LITTLECUP running from June 25 to July 2 on Lake Zurich.

Research on Hydros.ch is helping to develop energy-efficient solutions for the future. The flying catamaran already holds the existing speed records on Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich.
