World's first trade fair and conference for emissions trading aimed at reducing CO2 - June debut for Cologne's annual Carbon Expo

Cologne, Germany (ots)

In cooperation with the World Bank and
the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Koelnmesse is
expanding its range of events to include a segment of the environment
sector that is currently attracting great attention but has not been
previously addressed by the trade-fair business. Carbon Expo - Global
Carbon Market Fair & Conference, which will be held from June 9 to
11, 2004 in the Eastern Halls area of the Koelnmesse exhibition
grounds, will be the world's first trade fair and conference to deal
with the topic of emissions trading and the emerging carbon market.
The event will not only promote transparency in its role as an
information forum but also provide a platform where buyers, sellers,
market makers and service providers can meet. It will also offer
exhibitors the perfect stage to present technologies for reducing CO2
emissions.
The aim of emissions trading throughout the EU is to meet in a
cost-efficient way the industrial nations' obligation to
significantly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 2012 in
accordance with the Kyoto Protocol agreement concerning climate
protection. The system provides for the assignment of emission
rights, which can be traded between the companies involved, and
allows companies to purchase certificates from projects that reduce
emissions in developing countries and emerging economies. Point
Carbon, the leading global provider of independent analysis, news,
market intelligence and forecasting for the emerging carbon-emission
markets, estimates that the annual trade volume for emission rights
and certificates will reach approximately 10 billion Euro by the year
2005.
The partners of Koelnmesse combine the maximum expertise that is
presently available in this field. The World Bank is the first
organization to initiate funds dedicated to the reduction of
greenhouse gases in developing countries and emerging economies. The
Geneva-based IETA is a non-profit organization. It actively advocates
that the availability of a global green-house-gas market in which
business can participate is part of the solution to the challenge of
climate change. IETA represents more than 80 leading international
industrial companies, suppliers of technical-inspection services,
brokerage firms and providers of financial and consulting services.
Carbon Expo in Cologne will present processes, methods and
technologies for reducing CO2 emissions and feature ways of trading
in emission rights and certificates. The conference part of Carbon
Expo will provide information and training about the complex legal
and technical frameworks and explain the procedures for trading
emission rights and generating emission reductions through the
project mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. Both areas will promote the
building of relationships among sellers, buyers and intermediaries
that is so critical to the success of the global carbon market.
Exhibitors and speakers will include suppliers of pollution-reducing
technologies and "clean" forms of energy, suppliers of certificates,
experts from engineering firms and technical-inspection associations,
services suppliers from corporate consulting companies, and experts
from the areas of law and financial services. In addition, sellers
and government representatives from Latin America, Asia and Africa
will be present to help understand how to invest in emission
reductions and how governments will help. The main visitor groups to
be targeted include representatives of affected companies and their
counterparts from the energy business, industry and the political
sphere.
