An additional fast connection to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe will not be realized. The feasibility study authorized by Jungfraubahn Holding AG has provided an in-depth examination of various access options. The wide-ranging investigations are of considerable value to the further development of the Jungfrau Railway, as technical feasibilities have been demonstrated and clarification of the health aspect of faster travel to the Jungfraujoch has proved positive. The result of the collated facts is JungfraubahnPREMIUM, an innovative project that will permit a sustainable capacity increase and a shorter travelling time with the existing railway infrastructure. In this, the responsible persons are focusing on modern, high-speed shuttle trains and new crossing possibilities inside the mountain. This will enable more efficient train rotation and timetables and thus overcome current bottlenecks with high-season capacity. In the long-term, it will be possible to increase the qualitatively feasible maximum number of daily visitors to the Jungfraujoch from the current 4400 to 6000 persons. The long-term objective is to be able to welcome one million guests per year. Here, the measures required include modernisation of the Jungfrau Railway fleet of rolling stock. Within the scope of the project, the purchase of modern double locomotives is necessary to make a marked improvement in travelling comfort and also offer the latest experience elements such as infotainment systems. In addition, it will be possible to increase productivity and make the Jungfrau Railway more cost-efficient thanks to a rotation of four trains instead of three.
With more modern locomotives, it is also possible to travel the Kleine Scheidegg - Jungfraujoch - Kleine Scheidegg section in 90 minutes instead of 120. This means that the shortest travelling time from Grindelwald Grund - Jungfraujoch - Grindelwald Grund would be only 2 hours and 34 minutes. Thus with the additional fast connections, the envisaged aim of "the Jungfraujoch as a half-day-trip" becomes feasible, improving its appeal to present guest segments. Those responsible expect a positive effect on future revenue.
With improvements to the railway costing considerably less than CHF 100 million, investment will be far lower than would be the case with a new access variation. The costs of the different variations examined are between CHF 460 and 970 million.
With JungfraubahnPREMIUM, those responsible are now building on the existing structure, guaranteeing the least possible burden on the environment and the most economical use of resources. JungfraubahnPREMIUM is a long-term programme with a lead time and construction period of a minimum of five to six years.
