A new era is dawning for Nordex. Work has now commenced on extensions to its Rostock facilities in a project worth EUR 86 million. Over the next two years, new production halls with a total floor area of more than 52,500 square meters, roughly equivalent to seven football fields, will be built at the cargo center. In this way, the wind turbine producer will be increasing its capacity for Europe threefold.
"This step was urgently required to continue covering our customers´ rising demand in the future as well. Although we increased our production output at a high double-digit rate last year again, there is now very little reserve capacity left in Rostock," explains Thomas Richterich, CEO of Nordex AG. At the moment, the Company´s order books are valued at almost EUR 3 billion, thus ensuring that the growth forecasts can be achieved until the end of 2009. Looking ahead over the next two years, Nordex wants to roughly double its sales.
In a first step, Nordex will be extending its annual rotor blade production to around 1,000 megawatts. For this purpose, a new finishing hall will be completed by the end of the year, accompanied by extensions to the existing production facility to double the existing floor area. This will ensure that in the future it will also be possible for rotor blades with a length of over 50 meters to be produced.
Nordex will then be commencing on the second phase of the project in May entailing the construction of a new turbine assembly and control cabinet plant with a floor area of around 25,600 square meters together with a new administration and service building on the site. Explains Richterich: "After the completion of the two-year construction phase, we will have modern production facilities at one united site in Rostock, allowing us to harness opportunities for growth and operate more efficiently in the future."
Nordex will be creating at least 300 new jobs in connection with the extensions to its facilities in Rostock. At the moment, it employs around 700 people at the site. If demand in Europe continues to grow as swiftly as it has been doing, a third construction phase is also conceivable after the completion of the activities now commencing. Preliminary plans provide for rotor blade production to be doubled accompanied by a further extension to turbine as-sembly at the plant.
