The 60 pieces of exquisite bamboo carvings selected from the vast collection of the Shanghai Museum introduce the achievement, features and techniques of the unique art of Chinese bamboo carving from the early 17th century to the mid of 20th century, inviting you to a world of traditional Chinese handicrafts and the literati lifestyle in Jiangnan (today Shanghai) area.

China has a rich and unique culture dating back thousands of years. Bamboo carving is not only regarded as a separate category of traditional Chinese handicrafts, but also as a unique Chinese carving art, as it has unparalleled technique, aesthetics and cultural character.

Bamboo was widely used as a popular work and everyday material. Some bamboo items were carved for decorative purposes, becoming the first bamboo carvings in a broader sense. The aesthetic potential of bamboo was recognized and various carving techniques developed, taking into account the material properties of bamboo. The art of bamboo carving evolved over a thousand years and became the most ingenious of all arts. In their heyday, the works of art were appreciated above all by writers, civil servants, educated, wealthy citizens and dealers. Learning utensils or elegant carved objects, which were made for pleasure, were preferred. Famous carvers and their schools emerged and as a result bamboo carving became an art in its own right with unique attributes of literary arts and crafts.

The exhibition lasts from Thursday, 24th February 2022 to Sunday, 8th May 2022.
