Latest special coin to be issued: CERN silver coin brings research within reach
The new CERN special coin from Swissmint combines Swiss precision with cutting-edge research: the 20-franc silver coin honours scientific progress in Switzerland and showcases one of the most fascinating research institutes. It will be available from 13 March 2025.
Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name "Swiss special coins". The launch of the exclusive CERN silver coin illustrates the fascinating world of particle physics and underlines Switzerland's status as a centre of innovation.
The world's largest particle accelerator
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, is the most powerful research tool of its kind. In the 27-kilometre-long underground ring accelerator on the French-Swiss border, protons are accelerated to almost the speed of light and made to collide. The analysis of these collisions provides a deeper understanding of the fundamental structure of matter and how the Universe works.
By issuing the CERN silver coin, Switzerland is honouring its important role in cutting-edge international research. The coin emphasises Switzerland's important contribution to this pioneering scientific institution, which has become the hub of global particle physics since it was founded in 1954.
The special coins bring our country's history and memories to life
The 20-franc coin is made of a 999 silver alloy, has a diameter of 33mm and weighs 20g. The obverse depicts the collision of two accelerated particles in silver embossing. The collision in the particle accelerator is portrayed in a comic-like style. The words UNIVERSE OF PARTICLES and CERN, which are embossed in the spirals of the particle accelerator below the two particles, illustrate the world of atoms.
The centre of the obverse features a cross-sectional image of the particle accelerator magnet. The image is framed by the words CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA 2025, while the face value of 20 FR. completes the frame on the lower side of the coin. A small "B" indicates the place of manufacture, Bern.
"CERN is one of the most famous locations for conducting groundbreaking particle research. With the world's longest particle accelerator, Switzerland plays an important role in innovation and research both at home and around the world. The special coin honours this contribution to science and highlights the fascinating nature of research," explains Jan Niklas Betz, Deputy General Manager and Head of Marketing/Sales at Swissmint.
It will be released in a strictly limited issue: 7,500 coins in uncirculated quality with an issue price of CHF 25, and 3,500 coins in proof quality with an issue price of CHF 79. It will be available from 13 March 2025 in Swissmint's official online shop.
Each special coin is a miniature work of art
The Federal Mint Swissmint produces Swiss franc coins on behalf of the Swiss Confederation. These have been created in the heart of Switzerland since 1855, and in the popular Kirchenfeld district of Bern since 1906. Since 1936, Swissmint has also minted special coins to commemorate important historical and cultural events and to honour prominent figures. Each of these special coins is a miniature work of art in a unique tradition of artistry and craftsmanship.
